Many psychiatrists have a curiosity for understanding the human mind. Often people who seek psychotherapy share this curiosity and are interested in better understanding their own. Dr. Pirok thinks of himself as a guide in this process, and the traditional hierarchy of the doctor-patient is dissolved. Together, you and he will learn the origins of how you feel and react. The reasons for the choices you make are often rooted in early childhood experiences. Having this information is not curative or sufficient for changing the way you feel. Having an understanding of how your personal history shapes you today, however, does allow for self-compassion and does validate the way you have learned to cope. Where there is understanding, there is compassion and empathy; only then can other options be entertained for the way in which you respond to your environment.
Psychotherapy is partially about expanding the range of options available to you, ultimately making possible changes that were not thought possible. Psychotherapy helps add additional strategies to what you have learned already, thus empowering you to have more choices and a greater range of possibilities. Dr. Pirok looks forward to helping you on this journey.
